An origin story of

Laura (Thurbon/Ortega) Muralist

Laura (Thurbon) Ortega is a world of creativity contained within a single, unstoppable artist. Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Laura grew up as the granddaughter of a distinguished admiral in the Peruvian Navy, affording her an early exposure to diverse cultures, countries, and communities. This vibrant cultural foundation, along with her intense eight-year study at the prestigious National Fine Arts School of Lima, shaped her into a multifaceted artist and educator. Graduating as both a professional artist and art teacher, Laura has traveled an inspiring journey across continents, with her works now gracing collections in the United States, South America, Europe, Israel, and India.

With a style that blends vivid mythology and raw emotion, Laura’s murals and paintings are captivating realms of color, energy, and story. Each piece is a testament to her skill and passion, inviting viewers to step into worlds both fierce and enchanting. Her artwork is not only found on canvas but also transforms walls and public spaces across the American Southwest, where her murals add splashes of beauty and depth to everyday life.

Beyond the brush

Laura’s talents are not confined to a brush; she has over two decades of experience as an art educator, inspiring students of all ages—from children in private and charter schools to adult learners at community colleges. As an educator, she shares her knowledge with a generosity and enthusiasm that have won her a dedicated following. Her career took on new dimensions after her move to the United States, where she launched a thriving mural and fine art business, specializing in large-scale murals for both residential and commercial spaces, custom tile art, and commissioned canvases.

But Laura’s journey didn’t stop at art. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to master the art of marketing, learning everything from graphic design and social media to website development and trade show coordination. She now combines her artistic vision with contemporary marketing strategies, creating unique campaigns and materials that captivate and engage. Recently, Laura joined an innovative IT managed services firm, bringing her creative flair to an industry often seen as technical and formal, redefining the “propeller-head” world with a fresh, artistic perspective.

Through it all, Laura continues to nurture her own artistic passions. In her spare time, she paints custom murals, creates pet portraits, and pursues her love of photography. A modest philanthropist at heart, she also recently completed a large-scale mural for San Vincent De Paul, honoring the Champions for the Homeless. Laura Thurbon is not just an artist; she’s a storyteller, an innovator, and a vibrant force who bridges cultures, disciplines, and mediums to inspire those around her.
